The Day Time Stopped
The earth didn't warn her.
It simply... shook.
Books crashed from the shelves.
Glass shattered.
The lights flickered before the apartment was swallowed by darkness.
Vanya Kapoor stood frozen in the middle of her living room, her heartbeat louder than the sirens echoing outside.
Only a moment ago, she had been curled up on the couch, reading an old novel set in a forgotten village called Devgarh.
The bookmark still rested between its final pages.
Her phone lay beside her.
The last thing she had opened...
Pinterest.
A strange vibration rippled beneath her feet.
The floor cracked.
The bookshelf tipped forward.
The novel slipped from her hands.
The world became white.
...
Silence.
Not the silence after chaos.
The silence before something impossible.
When Vanya finally opened her eyes, the apartment was gone.
The towering buildings...
Gone.
The familiar city skyline...
Gone.
Instead, endless mustard fields swayed beneath a golden sky.
Bullock carts rolled along dusty roads.
Women in colorful ghagras carried clay pots on their heads.
Children ran barefoot through narrow lanes.
And in the distance stood an enormous haveli overlooking the village.
Confused, Vanya pulled out her phone.
No signal.
No Wi-Fi.
No network.
Yet...
The screen lit up.
The date read:
18 October 1970.
Her breath caught.
"No..."
Before she could think, voices echoed behind her.
"There she is!"
"Our Vanya bitiya has finally returned from London!"
A middle-aged woman rushed forward with tears streaming down her face.
"My child..."
The woman wrapped trembling arms around her as though they had been separated for years.
Vanya stood completely still.
She had never seen this woman before.
Yet the woman held her like a daughter.
Across the courtyard, a tall man dressed in a white kurta watched silently.
Calm.
Reserved.
Unreadable.
Their eyes met for only a second.
Something strange settled in Vanya's heart.
Not recognition.
Not fear.
As if time itself had whispered—
"You were always meant to meet him."
